Forever Forest: Restore Land & Mangrove in Java

Hello! Let's convert abandoned land into a happy and thriving mangrove forest 💙💙💙

 We are Karbon Biru Indonesia, a youth-led initiative which have been planting more than 6,100 mangroves. Karbon Biru was founded in 2021 after winning WWF Netherlands' INNO Challenge . We have involved more than 250 volunteers across Indonesia and proudly say, we are 100% grassroot.

For us, mangrove plantation has been a very long journey and our financing has been derived mainly from crowdsourcing and winning multiple competitions.

What makes us different from other planting trees organization? We plant blue trees (a.k.a mangroves) that sequester 5-10 times more carbons than ordinary trees. While it's dense roots are able to dissipate waves and protect society from tsunami and erosion.

Further, we keep update of the mangroves planted biannually. Thus, we keep our accountability that the trees are still alive and thriving. We do not plant trees, but we build a forest.

Following our journey planting on government's land, we decided to go beyond public partnership to create our own permanent forest in Situbondo, East Java, Indonesia. We have found a suitable land from an abandoned aquaculture ponds:

The mangrove in the area was deforested since 2010, and has experienced erosion resulting in the loss of 21 meters ever since. The total area for #ForeverForest available is 4.3 hectares.

The abandoned, eroded, and sad area without any barrier is ready to be a sustainable, green, and lively mangrove forest.

As a kick-off project, we'll try to fund pond 3 (1,278m2), in which your investment will directly support environmental, marine, and societal causes. By year 6, we plan to cultivate crab babies, which will be sustainably managed by and harvested for the local community.

If 10,289 USD seems like a substantial sum, we've translated it into individual investments. With every 5 USD, you'll be contributing to: 3 mangroves on 0.5 lands, 8.8kgCO2eq stored in 10 years, and 3.3USD/year starting from year 6 for local society by harvesting crabs, and protect the biodiversity!

The solution does not mobilize nor drive out the coastal and indigenous people. We emphasize indigenous peoples' rights to the lands; and even to create a protected and safe area for coastal society to live.
